Ah, where would we be without it? Facebook, twitter, email, text messaging, phone calls, letters….the list of ways to contact those we care about (and a few we’d rather not) is almost endless. How many times a day do we reach for some type of device that connects us to the outside world and those in it? Think about it for a minute. We spend so much time talking to people, discussing things, or just observing general conversation. Why?
Humans have this need for relationships, this desire to click with others, to relate. We thrive on emotional and social interaction, and without it are often moody, unbalanced or depressed. Communication is such an important part of our lives, and yet sometimes we forget to stop and do just that. A sentence here and there, an occasional text message, and those people that we used to be so close to suddenly seem distant and different. It’s a vital part of our everyday lives.
It’s how we share ideas, explore, create, and build together as a society. Technology has advanced greatly, making communication even easier for us. So why do we often forget to use them? Trying to be independent, self-sufficient, can make us forget that we can’t get everywhere by ourselves. We need others to help us get there, and to help us get through those moments when we don’t think we can get to where we’re trying to.
Our frustrations can pile up, stress gets to us, and we don’t feel our best. What else are we supposed to do if we don’t have some outlet for our emotions? Talking to a friend, communicating issues at hand, and discussing problems helps us to see them better. By explaining to someone else, we can get a better grasp of what we’re trying to say. It’s a key in our well-being. Communication.
